How to get the most out of your shower steamers

First, what is a shower steamer? Shower steamers are basically an essential oil diffuser for your shower routine. They are hard little tablets packed with super fragrant oils that will be released when the water activates them. The tablet is typically citric acid + baking soda, or some similar blend of acid/base and salt. When the water hits them, the acid and base react (similar to a bath bomb) and release the essential oils into the air, creating an aromatherapeutic spa-like shower experience.

To get the most out of your steamers, make sure your maker is using a high enough percentage of essential oils, or opt for a menthol-blend. In my discussions with clients who love steamers, I’ve learned a few more tips for getting the most out of your spa shower:

  1. Steamers work best in small enclosed showers — tiny walk-ins are best!

  2. If your shower is a (new England normal) larger shower/tub combo, try to keep the steamer near your head — set it on a ledge or hang it in an organza bag from the shower head. (If you set it on the floor of your shower, you may not get the full aromatherapy experience)

  3. You can control the intensity of fragrance with water! Activate by passing it under the water stream and then for longer-lasting fragrance, leave it just outside the stream, where a few drops may hit it, but it wont dissolve immediately. I’ve even gotten multiple showers out of a single steamer this way — just let the steamer dry out fully after first use.

  4. Be aware that menthol/eucalyptus/peppermint blends are VERY strong. Folks use them in the winter to help open their sinuses. Please be careful in handling these, and don’t ever place them where the runoff may hit your eyes. Also rinse your hands thoroughly after activating them, or you may be in for a chilly surprise.

  5. Never ever use shower steamers as bath bombs. The amount of essential oil in them is simply too high to be safe in a bath.

What’s your favorite shower steamer blend? For the moment I’m only doing steamers through the holidays, but am planning a line and would love to hear what sort of fragrances you like the best!
